Dear Colleagues:
Thank you for transmitting my memorandum on noise to the
Administration and for the copies of the replies. I think you would
agree that their position seems to be that there is no action about
the problem that is appropriate for them to do. Having decided
on a point-by-point refutation of every proposal, Mr. x did this
in a quite perfunctory way. In particular I don't believe that
Stanford uses the least noisy equipment available, and my proposal
concerning the back-up-beepers was that they be toned down rather
than eliminated. I also don't agree with the remark that a noise
meter would merely serve as a challenge to be noisy. It wouldn't
if the meter was had a red line labelled, ``You are liable to a
citation and the withdrawal of your permit to bring your vehicle
on campus''.
I would like to make one more try before I give up. Namely,
I would like five minutes to raise the issue in a Senate meeting.
If there is no strong feeling about the matter from any other members
I'll give up. Otherwise, I try to think of some way to pursue it
further.
Sincerely,
